Beginning her career performing in burlesque and vaudeville numbers,
singer and comedian Sophie Tucker became one of the most popular entertainers
in America during the early 20th century. In 1912 she had success in a
supporting role at the Walnut in
Louisiana Lou, where she reportedly
brought down the house with a spoof of underworld dancing known as
