A touring company brought a three-week run of the hit
Arsenic and Old Lace
to the Walnut in April of 1942. The play returned in January starring the original
cast, including (from left) Jean Adair, Josephine Hull, and Boris Karloff
(who had changed his name from William Pratt). The dark comedy about two sweet
old ladies who lure lonely old men into their home and murder them was originally
conceived as a serious thriller, but the producers turned it into a comedy, following
their success with the hit comedy
Life with Father.
