1966

The 1966-67 season opened with Woody Allen's first stage success, Don't Drink the Water. Lou Jacobi and Vivian Vance (best known as Ethel from I Love Lucy, shown here from left with the playwright) starred in this comedy set in an American Embassy somewhere behind the iron curtain. The show suffered from multiple cast changes and a lack of direction during tryouts, but the audiences responded well to the humor and it ran for almost 600 performances on Broadway.
