1968
In March 1968, Tennessee Williams'
The Seven Descents of Myrtle came to the Walnut.
The playwright, here shown center with the original cast and director at a read-through
of the play, was drinking heavily and taking amphetamines, which affected both his
writing and his attendance at rehearsals. Many considered this an artistic failure,
and it closed on Broadway after only 29 performances. (Photograph courtesy of the
Theatre Collection, Free Library of Philadelphia.)
